Want to increase your uptime by eliminating botched deployments?
You may want to consider AWS AppConfig’s feature flag settings.
Let's say you have a big launch coming up.
Do you want to send your code live and just hope and pray the build/deployment process goes smoothly?
What if you need to roll back? If your idea of a roll back is to just send through the previous commit through your build process, that might take a while.
If this is the case, you could consider using feature flags.
Send the code up during off hours ahead of time and then just instantly flip the feature flag when you want that functionality to be exposed publicly.
If you find a problem, just flip the feature flag off again, and you are rolled back.
There are a ton of edge cases that could complicate things, but that is it in a nutshell.
AWS AppConfig can help you make that happen.
As I write this, I have not found a solid way to A/B performance test with AppConfig, but I am sure it either exists or they will launch that feature 5 minutes after this post goes live.
Question for you:
How are you doing feature flags currently?
